Biography

Melissa Dickman is the Program Coordinator for the School of Film, Dance and Theatre and a certified Kundalini Yoga instructor.

I am [currently] a human. But most days, I see myself as a rhizome.
I am a lifetime communicator, community maker, midnight philosopher and academic dabbler. [see also: crazy plant lady]

I am a trained stage manager, managing director and creative writer. This means I can color code, alphabetize, record, and label [with impressively catchy titles] the repertoire and turn it into archive. Occasionally I produce bi-lingual theatre [with a mono-lingual brain], help create immersive theatrical gardens, or facilitate experiments between science and art. I teach workshops on nonviolent communication, nonviolent direct action, and creating community.

I practice yoga, meditation, writing, social change, migration activism and space creation.

I am intellectually stimulated by the performance of identity [xican@s, indigenous & anarchist] in relationship to human rights and the nation-state as played out in marches, protests and street risings. Give me notes on movement, alternative knowing, politics, ontology, a sense of sacred and pop culture to play with ideas in my head. I am interested in the relationship between spiritual practice, ritual and political change - the intersections of the practice of belief and mass movements of change.

And at the end of day you will always find me at the root – as my heart is buried in soil discovering the interconnection, the communication, the nuance. Because in a tablespoon of soil can stretch miles of fungi – invisible complexity just beneath our fingertips.
