Biography

Dr. Cynthia Roses-Thema is the fourth generation of a show business family that includes vaudeville hoofers and singers, a Broadway actress, magicians with Ringling Brothers Circus and a Hollywood producer. Carrying on her show business heritage Dr. Roses-Thema has had diverse career pathways in the performing arts as a dancer, actor and writer. Her first career in the performing arts culminated in being a principal ballerina for the Chicago and Cincinnati Ballet Companies. Her repertoire consisted in over sixty roles for stage and screen from classical ballet to avant garde works dancing the choreography of Ruth Page, George Balanchine, Sir Frederick Ashton, Lester Horton, Frederick Franklin, Lar Lubovitch and many others. Additionally, Peter Anastos choreographed a solo especially for her entitled ‘Isadora Dances.’

As an actress some of Dr. Roses-Thema highlighted roles are as a homeless mother on the TV series Superboy and as Candida with Glendale Theatre. Dr. Roses-Thema was a dance critic/writer for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and has written for Dance Teacher, Dance Magazine, and the International Encyclopedia of Modern Dance. Entrepreneurially, Dr. Roses-Thema owned The Studio in Nokomis, Florida where she was also artistic director of the Nokomis Dance Ensemble. She is the author of three books, Rhetorical Moves, SPINE: 5 Strategies for the 21st Century Dancer,  and Spine: Using the SPINE strategies in Contemporary Ballet Workbook. She has two terminal degrees an MFA in Dance and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition. Currently she teaches in the online environment having designed three classes: Walk this Way, The Body Condition(ed) and Rhetorical Moves which encompass respectively: the sociological and somatic aspects of walking; situating body image and body conditioning in the social realm; and the embodied perception of the creative artist in the act of creation. Her research interests include theorizing and articulating the experience of movement; teaching creatively and personably in the online environment; using rhetorical/sociological frameworks to analyze the creative arts; and, teaching ballet from somatically.
