Biography

Eileen Standley is an artist whose work crosses disciplines of choreography, performance and visual arts practices (including video, drawing, and live art). She works with a variety of media in performance, exhibition or installation settings. What she creates is predominantly influenced by her background as a dancer and choreographer. Standley is dedicated to education and has taught in the area of dance and interdisciplinary arts over that last 30 years within universities, international festivals, academies, and schools of dance, art, and movement. At Arizona State University, she is teaching Creative Practices, Movement Practices, Somatic Practices, and the Alexander Technique.

Her artistic research often explores a threshold moment before gesture manifests itself in the material world. Consciousness, the metaphysical, and radically shifting states of body/mind are recurring themes of inquiry. Informed by practices of realtime composition/improvisation, live art, somatically-driven investigations and collaborative tendencies, her performances, as well as video and installation work have been shown locally, nationally and internationally.

After 24 years of living and working in Europe, Standley relocated back to the U.S. where she now holds a position as clinical professor within the School of Film, Dance and Theare ASU since 2009.

Standley’s choreography and video work has been commissioned and supported by various international arts institutions, festivals, and funding bodies, such as Fonds vd Podiumkunst, Mama Cash, and Anjer Fonds (in the Netherlands), Centre Dramatic D’Osona (Spain), Full Moon Festival and Zodiak Presents (in Finland), Contemporary Dance Assn. of Japan, amongst others.
