Biography

Dr. Mary McAvoy is an assistant professor in the School of Film, Dance, and Theatre. She received her bachelor's degree in theatre (with K-12 teacher certification) from the University of North Carolina Asheville and her master's degree and doctorate in theatre (focus in theatre for youth) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Arizona State University, she teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate theatre programs, directs the theatre education teacher certification programs and serves as the faculty coordinator for community engagement programming connected with the Film, Dance, and Theatre season.

Her research and creative practice focus histories of theatre and drama in educational contexts; educational theatre/drama and theatre teacher preparation; teaching artistry; radical and experimental performance with, by, and for young people; and performance pedagogy and activism. She is the co-author of Drama and Education: Performance Methodologies for Teaching and Learning (Routledge) and co-editor of Youth and Performance: Perceptions of the Contemporary Child (OLMS). Her articles have appeared in Youth Theatre Journal, The Journal of American Drama and Theatre, and various edited collections. She has also presented master classes and professional development in theatre teaching and theatre arts curriculum integration in the US, Russia, and China. Her current book, Rehearsing Revolutions: The Labor Drama Experiment and Radical Activism in the Early Twentieth Century (University of Iowa Press - Studies in Theatre History and Culture series), is forthcoming spring 2019.
